Most of the horses used by various riding centres in the Algarve are at least part Lusitano, the famously sure-footed Portuguese breed.  
 
Lusilanos are hardy, medium-sized horses of good temperament. Their sure footedness makes them ideal for riding either through soft, sandy, coastal pinewoods or along stony trails in the hills. There is a wide choice of centres. There are Lusitanos for all levels of riders. Most of the riding centres welcome everyone, from well-experienced hackers to young beginners In need of some lessons. for the very young there are short pony walks. Be sure to have a well-fitting riding helmet.
