Multi-million euro investment in Algarve’s ports
Approximately thirty million euros are to be invested by the Port and Maritime Transport Institute (IPTM) in fishing ports throughout the Algarve, by 2012. The biggest investment, €10 million, is to be invested in Tavira’s docks. According to daily newspaper Correio da Manha, €14.8 million will be put towards improving nautical infrastructures in eight of the region’s ports.

Algarve retirement haven
An agreeable, mild climate means the Algarve is still one of the most sought after locations for foreigners to enjoy their retirement, especially the British and Germans. A study financed by the Aga Khan Foundation and carried out by the Boston Consulting Group and the Centro de Estudos e Desenvolvimento Regional e Urbano, a Portuguese urban and regional development centre, analysed the existing offer for the care of the elderly and questioned a total of 1,300 people aged over 55, across Portugal.

Portimao to host first major test of 2009
Portugal's new Algarve circuit in the Portimao region is set to host the first major track action of 2009 later this month. It was already known that Toyota, Williams and Renault intend to get their new single seaters up and running at the newly opened venue during a four-day test session beginning January 18. Citing the information of the operators of the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, Portuguese media report that McLaren and Red Bull will also be present for the January test.

By means of replicas of different objects, interactive modules and experiments, visitors will be able to learn about the science relating to the great voyages of exploration carried out by the Portuguese starting from Lagos.

Four Algarve towns join Cittaslow movement
A number of Algarve towns have been named as official members of Cittaslow, it has emerged. Daisy Sampson, writing for the Resident, revealed that Tavira, Silves, Sao Bras de Alportel and Lagos have become members of the slow city movement, which was established in 1999 by Paolo Saturnini. The initiative attempts to enhance the quality of life for both visitors and residents in the areas selected.
