More than ten new private
hospitals are in the pipeline to be built in the Algarve, where beds in
that sector are expected to triple over the next five years, and are
mainly aimed at tourists holidaying in the region. The region’s main private health
groups believe that the Algarve has serious reasons to better cater for
an ‘expanding sector’, for which there is demand, and new projects have
been confirmed in Albufeira, Faro and Portimão.

"Xinana", "Lua" and "Luna" are female dolphins and "Coris",
"Anubis", "Gil" and "Barish" are sea lions, which were flown from Rome
(Italy) to Zoomarine in Albufeira on Thursday in an air force plane in
order to reproduce. The operation went “very well” according to the director of Science
and Education at Zoomarine in Albufeira, Hélio Vicente.

ALGAR, THE company that
recycles the region’s solid waste, will be investing around 18 million
euros to make energy for the national grid from waste materials.
According
to Hélio Barros, a spokesman from Algar, the company is going to
construct a biogas factory. “This project is already in the field and
should be complete by 2010,” he said. As well as biogas, Algar is also hoping to
create waste and residue derived fuel that will be used in biomass
plants and cement factories.

A five hectare car park with space for 1650 vehicles will be built
on private land close to the southern end of the runway at Faro
airport, a source at Polis has told the Algarve Observer. At the moment, the Sociedade Polis Litoral Ria Formosa is
negotiating the purchase of the land, and building work there will
include a public transport terminal which will provide transport to
Praia de Faro.

In news that may boost the prospects for the Algarve property market, low-cost airline Ryanair has announced new winter flights to the Portuguese region. The popular southern area will see new routes operating from Glasgow, Liverpool and East Midlands into Faro airport, in addition to the operators current routes from London Stanstead, Dublin and Shannon.
