The water desalination project for supplying four hotels with about
a thousand rooms near the Praia de Alvor will necessitate an investment
of about a million euros.
Pedro Lopes, director of the Pestana group in the Algarve, the
company that is preparing to implement the desalination project, says
that the desalination unit will have a maximum output of fresh water of
800 cubic metres per day.
The desalinated water will be used in the hotels Alvor Praia,
Delfim, D. João II, Alvor Atlântico and surrounding gardens, without
restrictions, as, once treated, the water meets all requirements for
consumption.
According to the businessman, the current average consumption of
hotels in the group amounts to 250,000 m3 per day, of which about 60%
is used for watering, washing and laundry purposes.
The use of desalinated water will enable saving of about 30% to be made in the hotels’ average consumption.
The salt water will be drawn directly from the sea and will be
treated through Reverse Osmosis technology, a technique that is
normally used in processes such as the desalination or the recovery of
wastewaters in industry.
For every 100m3 of sea water, 40m3 are turned into fresh water, and
the remaining 60m3 returned to the sea, but with 40% more salt. The
investment does not require the construction of specific
infrastructures, but rather will install machinery in premises that
have been in existence for a long time next to the Hotel Pestana Delfim.
