 The coastal risk alert system will enable authorities to determine the consequences of a storm to coastal areas three days in advance, explained Óscar Ferreira, coordinator of the Portuguese division of the Micore project. “The system will determine whether there is the possibility of erosion, retreat of the coast line, material damage or ocean swells during a storm” said the researcher at the Navy and Environmental Research Centre of the Algarve University. |

 The Algarve University is looking to build a marine research laboratory by 2012, to be included in a European network of research centres, part of a project developed by the university. Adelino Canário, the Director of the Sea Sciences Department at Universidade do Algarve, spoke of the university’s ambition to create a marine research laboratory during the presentation of the European Biological Resources Centre project at the university. “The Algarve should stand out not only for sun and beach tourism, but also for top end scientific research” said the director. |

 International School São Lourenço (ISSL) is attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for the ‘Biggest Human Mattress Domino’. ISSL now wants to break the existing record by gathering 200 people and mattresses in the Algarve Stadium, on 12th November which is also Guinness World Records’ Day.The current world record beat a previous record held by BBC children’s programme Blue Peter, which had accomplished a human mattress domino with 100 participants at the BBC studios, last September 22nd. |

 Hilton Hotels on October 28 announced the signing of a management agreement between Hilton Worldwide and HN Group to open a full service Hilton resort in the seaside destination of Alvor, in the Western half of the Algarve in Portugal. The new Hilton Alvor, which will boast some of the finest local sea view scenery, is scheduled to open in 2012. “The Algarve is one of Europe’s most visited holiday destinations and we believe in its potential for growing Hilton’s portfolio of hotels, with its great weather, vibrant culture and strong tourism infrastructure,” Patrick Fitzgibbon, Hilton Worldwide Senior Vice President – Development, said. |
