Jits Bakker offers sculpture to Loulé |
|
The Dutch sculptor Jits Bakker is to offer his work "Crucifix" to the
Municipal Council of Loulé, in thanks for the "recognition" given to
his work over the years by the local authority. The ceremony will take place on Friday 13th at 18.00hrs, in
the Paços do Concelho. The sculpture will be handed over by the Rector
of the University of Utrecht (Holland), Willem Gispen.
The Council has ordered various sculptures from the artist in recent
years, which have "beautified the urban zones of the borough", as is
the case of the "Happy People Dancing" and "The Cyclist" in Loulé and
"The Fisherman" in Quarteira.
Jits Bakker was born in Holland but largely developed his
career far from his country of birth, having spent time in the United
States, Mexico and Norway, amongst other countries, including Portugal.
Beginning his career as a painter, he learned, inspired by the
Renaissance, to make known his own art in various forms, such as the
execution of mosaics in glass and jewellery in silver, until he
dedicated himself to his great passion, sculpture in bronze, marble and
stone.
Recently, the streets of the cities of Loulé and Quarteira also received an exhibition of public art under his authorship.
