Everything, or almost everything, stopped, to catch a glimpse of
Mourinho in a hard hat visiting the building site of what will be the
first six-star hotel in the country. The workers, many of them African,
cheered at Mourinho, who was followed by a retinue of journalists,
Portuguese and foreign. José Mourinho - the “Special One” - is investing in the purchase of one
or more apartments at the Conrad– Palácio da Quinta Resort&Spa, at
Quinta do Lago.
Mourinho believes in the de luxe resort and made a point of
announcing this at a press conference at the Hotel Hilton in Vilamoura,
without, however, saying how much he was going to invest.
He told the Algarve Observer that he had ties with the Algarve for a
number of reasons (his father is from Ferragudo in Lagoa), and he had
an emotional link to the Algarve which is why he was interested in this
project.
Careful with his words but always well disposed, the best paid
former manager in the world, who led Chelsea at one of the best times
in its history, said that real estate was less risky than football, at
least as far as this project was concerned. He said he was not a
businessman nor was he a great investor, far from it. He said he just
wanted a good, quiet life with his family and friends. The millionaire
manager said he did not want to coach until he was 80, he wanted to
have space to enjoy life in this way, he just wanted to be a person
like everyone else, which is what he was. He said that the most
important thing was that it was a way of defining objectives and of
believing in the team you were joining; this was the most difficult
decision, but it had already been taken. He added that he believed in
the philosophy of Imocom and that this was a project with almost zero
risk, it was a win-win situation.
Alejandro Martins, president of Imocom, the promoters of the
project, said that Mourinho was interested in companies that were
winners and in quality projects, and for them it was an honour to have
Mourinho say that he wanted to invest in one or more luxury apartments,
but he said that Mourinho's interest was genuine and it was not in
exchange for the use of his image.
Named "Palácio da Quinta Resort & Spa", the first six-star hotel
is a “PIN” (Project of National Interest), and represents an investment
of 88.63 million euros and will have a total construction area of
61,000 square metres.
The project promoters envisage that the hotel will open towards the end of 2009.
The luxury apartment hotel, located in one of the top ten tourist
destinations in the world, will offer a sauna, spa and jacuzzi on the
balcony in each of the exclusive apartments and properties.
With a total of 620 beds, the resort will have 160 bedrooms and 80 apartments (1- and 2-bedroom).
According to the promoters, the Portuguese company IMOCOM, the
development will be responsible for 0.22% of gross regional added value
and 0.21% of regional employment, providing 404 direct and indirect
jobs.
Six-star hotel, jacuzzi on the balcony, sauna and spa in the
apartment, all seem to be tailor-made conditions for the “special one”,
or at least, that is the way the world's most expensive ex-manager is
thinking.
