Al-Masrah is embarking on the second staging of the “Theatre in the Winter” festival, whose aim, apart from the productions themselves, is to talk about what it is to be involved in theatre. From 19th January to 4th February, there is an unusual event running in Tavira: “Theatre in the Winter” organised by the Al-Masrah theatre group.
In this the second staging of the event, “Theatre in the Winter” is bringing together theatre, dance and cinema, along with discussions about theatre itself.
Pedro Ramos, director of the Al-Masrah theatre group, told the Algarve Observer that they wanted to get people to come to the theatre; he said that they knew more and more people and wanted to get them to come and see them.
He said that this year there had been a qualitative leap in the programme, which can be seen in the involvement of some major guests. Such are José Oliveira Barata, a researcher who will speak about the past, present and future of theatre in Portugal (27th January at 4.30 pm), the teacher José Louro who will speak about his life in theatre (3rd February at 4.30 pm), Ana Cristina Oliveira, who will present her book about half a century of theatre in the Algarve (20th January at 4.30 pm) and Luís Vicente, who will talk about the process of creating the play “Ricardo III”, by Shakespeare, a talk that will be preceded by a screening of the film by Al Pacino “À procura de Ricardo III” (Looking for Richard) (28th January at 4.30 pm).
At the same time, there will be training workshops on theatre/dance, led by Rita Alves, an important opportunity for dancers and actors: for dancers because they will be helped to improve their dramatic expression; for actors because their will learn better control of their bodies and elasticity.
The shows and talks will take place at the Corredoura in Tavira, at Rua D. Marcelino Franco, nº 41, in a studio theatre sitting 50 people, and it is supported by the Tavira Municipal Council and the Ministry of Culture.
