Portugal’s
Algarve region has been the country’s major summer hotspot for years,
and it continues to attract visitors from near and far. New
developments and infrastructure improvements are drawing more interest
from tourists and investors as the region looks to continue as the most
popular destination in the country for the future.
A new Central
Hospital is in the works for the Parque das Cidades between Loulé and
Faro, and this will help everyone in the region, from international
visitors and residents to locals who have lived here all their lives.
The new hospital is set to begin construction in 2009 with completion
due in 2012. Until the hospital is up and running, a regional health
center and laboratory will operate nearby.
This is the
first of several new facilities for the Parque das Cidades, which
surrounds the Algarve Stadium. A technology center is also being
planned by the Algarve Regional Centre for Innovation (CRIA).
Additionally, there are plans for a meeting and convention center with
room for 1,800 people and a hotel with 200 new beds.
The new
hospital, which together with the conversion of the current building
into a continuing care unit represents an investment of €250 million,
will have 549 beds. It will also have new areas of specialism such as
Angiology and Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Endocrinology and
Nutrition, Medical Genetics, Neuroradiology and Radiotherapy, none of
which currently exists at the Faro Hospital.
