The International School of the Algarve 35th year celebrations |
|
This month the International School of the Algarve is celebrating the 35th anniversary of its foundation. As part of the festivities, thirty talented singers from the School will be joined by fifteen adult singers to perform 'The Happy Prince', an opera by Gita Nasta. Ms. Nasta, founded and directed the Brussels Youth Opera, staging regular events throughout Belgium, and performing in Ireland at the opening of the Waterford International Opera Festival in 1996. Composer of seven operas and five musicals, Ms. Nasta has always been motivated by younger voices.
Since her arrival in the Algarve a decade ago, she has become well known for her work with young singers at the International School of the Algarve. The first performance of 'The Happy Prince' was at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1981. Since then the opera has been performed many times in English and Dutch. The opera is set in a mediaeval city and the large cast includes two principals, seventeen soloists and a chorus. The music is melodic and catchy and the opera is accompanied by a small ensemble. The International School of the Algarve's performance of 'The Happy Prince' takes place at the Hotel Almansor, Carvoeiro, on 19 and 20 October at 20.00 and on 21 October at 15.00. Tickets are available from the School Office and also from the charity group 'Friends of Cambodia'. The performance lasts ninety minutes and there will be an interval. (Sorry, no children under five, but everyone else is welcome.) Faithfully following Oscar Wilde's touching fairytale, the opera tells the story of a golden statue of a prince who stands high above his city observing the misery and suffering of the poor. He persuades a little swallow to delay his flight south and to take all the prince's gold and jewels to share out among the poor. The swallow has many adventures in his role as messenger. The International School is covering all the costs of this production. The proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the charity, 'Friends of Cambodia' to support health and educational projects for Cambodian children. Tickets cost 5 euros and can be purchased in advance at the International School Office (282 342 547) or through 'Friends of Cambodia' (964 877 032). source: The Portugal News |
