Underwater tours in demand in the Algarve |
|
Tourists from all over Europe are increasingly choosing the Algarve for diving holidays to visit historical treasures hidden deep in the region’s waters. Promoters of these trips see them as a great alternative to the traditional beach and sun tourism and believe demand will keep on rising. Hidden treasures do not lack in the Algarve’s waters, with a seventeenth century ship and a World War II airplane being the region’s most featured attractions, catching the attention of tourists from Germany, Spain, France and England.
José Vieira, in charge of ‘Hidroespaço’, a company which is currently developing underwater tourism in the Algarve, explained that although people from all over Europe contact the company for underwater tours, it is mostly Portuguese who are interested. These underwater tours were created when Hidroespaço signed a protocol with the Portuguese Institute of Archaeology in 2004, allowing the tourism company to take visitors to the underwater ‘spots’ with complete authorization. Dives cost between €30 and €50, depending on which one clients choose. Some of the fantastic underwater structures which can be found are the B-24 Liberator bomber, a World War II airplane, and a seventeenth century ship with all its weapons and cargo spread along the sea bed, and they are both just off the coast of Faro, less than 20 metres below sea level. source: http://www.the-news.net/ |
