Algarve leads the way in recycling
Algarve recyclingAlgar, the company responsible for recycling the Algarve region’s waste, last year produced almost 25,000 tonnes of recyclable material. Data shows that in 2010 Algar sent off 24,883 tonnes of waste material to be transformed into new products, an average of 78 tons per day.The company has said its record amount of recyclable waste is largely due to the active participation of the population, which is becoming more and more aware of the importance of properly separating waste.

This data indicates that Algar achieved the best results in Portugal for the second year running.

“It was, above all else, thanks to the active, conscious and dedicated participation of the Algarvean population that these results could be achieved”, a statement from the company read, also attributing the achievement to the success of ongoing awareness-raising campaigns.

In total, 12,332 tonnes of glass, 9,164 tonnes of paper and cardboard and 2,108 tonnes of plastic were processed by Algar, to be forwarded on to their respective recycling companies, along with 383 tonnes of metal and 896 tonnes of wood.
