The EU is contributing almost one million euros towards the construction of a new sport and well being centre, which is due to be inaugurated near the Ria Formosa in Faro, this month.

The project, which represents a total investment of around three million euros, received a declaration that it was of particular interest to the tourism industry, which led the EU to provide €800,000 towards its creation.

Ricardo Duarte, mentor of the ‘My Center’ project told Lusa News Agency that the funds were justified by the fact that the facility, which is to include a gym, spa and competitive sports, is a “pioneer” in the Algarve and can complement the region’s hotels.

As well as the traditional gym training rooms, the facility will also have a climbing wall, an indoor pool for swimming and hydro gymnastics lessons and two tennis courts, on which a tennis school will be run.

The sport centre covers 4,000 square metres and will be able to accommodate 1,000 members.

“There is no public facility like this in the Algarve, only in the hotels,” said Mr. Duarte, adding that the project would be impossible without the financial support that has been received.

Mr. Duarte hopes that tourists as well as local residents will actively use the facility, and tourist packages are already being developed with various regional partners.

The ‘My Center’ project has been co-financed by the Algarve’s Regional Operational Programme (Algarve21) through the EU’s Regional Development Fund and the national planning authority (QREN).
