Jazz in Loulé: McCoy Tyner side by side with Joe Lovano |
Two jazz monsters, McCoy Tyner and Joe Lovano, will meet on stage at the XVI Festival Internacional de Jazz de Loulé. Highlights also to the Talking Cows, the Time Out and Bojan Z.The Festival International de Jazz de Loulé presents this year a milestone in the history of jazz: McCoy Tyner sided by the saxophonist Joe Lovano, in a concert scheduled for July 31, at 22.00, in Praça Duarte Pacheco. The duo will be backed by Gerald Cannon on bass and Eric Gravatt on drums. Alfred McCoy Tyner was born in Philadelphia in 1938. He is the oldest of three children and began studying piano at the age of thirteen. Two years later, music became the focal point in his life. The musician played in Jazztet, with Benny Golson & Art Farmer, joined the famous foursome of John Coltrane, substituting Steve Kuhn and, in 1966, started working with a new trio and launched his career as a leader. But there's more music to hear. The XVI International Festival de Jazz de Loulé starts in July 17th with Talking Cows, at 22.00, in Cerca do Convento do Espírito Santo. The Dutch quartet is formed by Frans Vermeerssen (tenor saxophone), Robert Jan Vermeulen (piano), Dion Nijland (bass) and Christian Thome (drums). The Talking Cows have recorded two albums: Bovinity, 2006, and Dairy Tales, 2008. The Bojan Z Tetraband with Bojan Zulfikarpasic (piano), Josh Roseman (trombone), Ruth Goller (bass guitar) and Sebastian Rochford (drums), will perform on July 23, at 22.00, in Praça Duarte Pacheco. Bojan Zulfikarpasic, best known as Bojan Z, was born in 1968, in Belgrade. He grew up listening to classics like Ravel and Claude Debussy and began playing piano at the age of five. He moved to Paris in 1988, playing with musicians such as Henri Texier, Scott Colley, Nasheet Waits, Ben Perowsky, Karim Ziad, Kudsi Erguner and Remi Vignolo. In 1993, he recorded his debut album, Quartet, followed by Yopla. In 1999, he engaged in the multi-ethnical project Koreni (Roots). Follows Solobsession, Transpacifik, Xenophonia and Humus. He often uses the combination of acoustic piano with an electric Fender Rhodes. Other sounds to listen at the Jazz Festival are given by Geraldine Laurent - Time Out Trio, July 30, at 22.00 pm, in the Praça Duarte Pacheco. Géraldine Laurent (alto saxophone) is one of the most exciting and recent revelations of French jazz. Born in Niort in 1975, she began her musical training with classical piano before picking up the saxophone, at age 13. The group is complete with Yoni Zelnik, on bass, and Laurent Bataille, on drums. |
