 The presence in the 29th Oficina de Música de Curitiba, one of the largest music events in Latin America, marks the agenda of the Orquestra do Algarve, who will also present a New Year’s concert, a concert for the Kings and a new cycle of Promenade concerts. The Orquestra do Algarve (OA) starts 2011 with two New Year’s concert, on January 1st in Vilamoura Casino and on Janury 2nd in the Auditório Municipal de Lagoa.
Conducted by their artistic director, the maestro Osvaldo Ferreira, the orchestra will perform pieces by Mozart, Bach, Lehár, Strauss Jr., Brahms and John Barry, with the special participation of the soprano Ana Paula Russo. The Concert for the Kings, on January 6th, takes place in Faro, in Teatro das Figuras. The first half of the concert will have the special feature of the band Omiri, a project by Vasco Ribeiro Casais (Dazkarieh – a world music band) and Tiago Pereira (video-jocking) with original pieces. The second half comprises pieces of Brahms, Strauss and John Barry.
Brazilian premier in the Oficina de Música de Curitiba
The OA makes their debut in Brazil, at the Oficina de Música de Curitiba, an important event of ancient, popular and classic music, celebrating in 2011 its 29th edition, from January 9-18. Organised by the Câmara e Fundação Cultural de Curitiba, the festival counts with over 1500 students and professors from all parts of the world, gathered during the event to learn, teach and share experiences.
Osvaldo Ferreira, artistic director and conductor of the OA, is also the artistic director of this year’s edition of the classic section of the festival.
Under his baton, the OA will perform on January 15 pieces by Joly Braga-Santos (Divertimento Nº 1), Georg Friedrich Haendel (Concert for Harp in B Major, HWV 294), Ludwig van Beethoven (Symphony N. 2 in D Major, Op. 36). Jennifer Campbell is the harp soloist.
For January 18, a promenade concert is scheduled with Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian dances, Bela Bartok’s Romenian Dances and the Marimba concert by Ney Rosauro, among other composers. Osvaldo Ferreira conducts and Fernando Rocha is the marimba soloist.
The maestro Osvaldo Ferreira will be also the conductor of the closing concert on January 19, directing the Choir and the Orquestra Sinfónica da Oficina de Música de Curitiba, with Piotr Banasik at the piano.
New cycle of Promenade concerts
Back in the Algarve are the Promenade Concerts, starting on January 30. The first session will present O Violino Cigano, by Pedro Faria Gomes.
