The Algarve wetlands a haven for birds and bird-lovers

Castro Marim, Portugal - Things get pretty crowded and hectic in the Reserva Natural do Sapal. In the autumn, some 150 species of birds gather there in the nature preserve on the Algarve's eastern coastal region, either to spend the winter or to rest awhile before flying further southwards.Hundreds of flamingos alone will be staying until the following April in the some 2,000-square-kilometre sanctuary in the delta of the Rio Guadiana river. The season is the ideal time, and the preserve the ideal spot, to go bird-watching - whether on foot, by bicycle or by boat.

Sun and sea continue to be a winning formula

Algarve’s tourism authority is confident that it has set a clear marketing plan for 2012, with strong focus being placed on the winning formula of sun and sea, golf and the meeting industry. The plan for the region, agreed to by the Algarve tourism board Turismo do Algarve and Turismo de Portugal, follows the release of the latest annual tourism figures this week. Next year, the priorities will be to continue promotion of the beaches and the climate, which have attracted millions of tourists to the Algarve since the 60s and remain the reason why the region is firmly placed on the world tourist map.

Algarve oil drilling approved

The cash-strapped government is expected to have completed the signing of a contract with two major international energy companies before the weekend is over allowing them to search for oil and gas reserves off the Algarve coast. Those in favour of the move argue drilling off Portugal’s southern coast would bring untold economic benefits. But prominent Algarve MP Mendes Bota has argued Portugal will pay the same for oil and gas found in its own waters as it would from anywhere else on the planet.

Vila Monte: Algarve' s best kept secret
