 A 75-year-old British resident is taking part in a 400km bike ride leaving from Albufeira to Fatima between November 9 and 13. Don Forrester, who lives in Carvoeiro, is raising funds for the Captain James Philippson Trust Fund which was set up in memory of Captain James Philippson, the first British soldier to lose his life in Afghanistan. Don has been a friend of James’ mother, Algarve resident Trish Quinlan, for four years and had met James when he came to stay in the Algarve. |

 The Number 3 SRT Z06 Corvette of Longin and Ruffier took their first win of the season FIA GT Championship yesterday, crossing the line 33 seconds ahead of the number 4 Pekaracing Corvette of Hezemans and Kumpen. Maserati, never far from the front runners of the Championship, were represented on the podium by the number 2 Vitaphone Racing Team Maserati MC 12 of Müller and Ramos, who finished third. The placing put their recent bad luck behind them and gave Miguel Ramos a very popular home finish. |

Zolder and the Algarve circuit have been added to the World Touring Car Championship's calendar for the 2010 season. The race at Zolder will take Pau's place on the calendar after the French street circuit was unable to confirm its deal with the WTCC in time, while the new Algarve circuit is introduced with the possibility of alternating with Porto, which is only able to host a race every two years. |

 The Algarve will once again be represented in the upper echelons of Portuguese football in the 2009/10 season. Jorge Costa’s Olhanense had spent most of the season top of the pile in the Liga Vitalis (2nd division), and the 1-0 victory away at Gondomar yesterday guaranteed promotion and also the championship for the southerners. Since Faro-based club Farense were relegated seven years ago the Algarve has had no club in Portugal’s top division. |
