The sailor Ricardo Dinis will set sail from Portimão, heading for
England, to deliver by hand a bottle a bottle of 1926 Port Wine to
Queen Elizabeth II, as a present for her 80th birthday. On board the boat "Visit Portimão" Ricardo Diniz has as his
co-skipper the British sailor Josh Hall, which reinforces the oldest
alliance of the world, between Portugal and England.
Their departure is scheduled for 11th November and it is hoped that the
voyage to London will take around 10 days. But everything depends on
the weather.
"I lived in London for many years of my life and created a
special empathy for England and its people. I love London. It was there
that I began on this path as a sailor. It is a great honour for me to
take this gift to Her Majesty, in the name of Portugal", said Ricardo
Diniz.
The initiative, which was presented yesterday in Portimão,
celebrates not only the birthday of the Queen, but also the 250 years
of the Demarcated Region of the Douro and the alliance between the two
countries.
29 year-old Ricardo Dinis, dubbed the "Ambassador of the Sea",
recently undertook the solo navigation of the maritime link between
Lisbon and Dakar in 15 days.
